about

After 15 years of friendship often centered around the sharing of music, in early 2019 John and Ned decided it was time to make some together --despite (or because of) the fact that their paths in life had made it difficult to be physically co-present. Ned’s chimes were at his wife’s family house in Maine, and his daily life was occupied by his work as a schoolteacher, husband and father in Queens. John had just returned to the US after years of living in Australia, and was living semi-nomadically between California, Minneapolis, and New York working as a writer.

Undeterred by distance in time and space, Ned sent John some cassette recordings of him playing chimes in Maine. John fed them into his laptop, twisting samples of the chimes, tuning wind and tape hiss into tones, and improvising with refracted versions of Ned's own sounds. Ned listened, and responded with suggestions for edits and refinements.

The process was repeated one song at a time, until very gradually over the course of 2019 this back and forth accrued into an album - a heartfelt index of one dear friendship, and a testament to the profound connections in life that can not only endure but flourish in new ways amidst times of separation.
